USA College 7s: Sonoma State off to Greensboro after Nor Cal win

Sonoma State off to Greensboro after Nor Cal win

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – After losing in the finals of a sevens tournament in 2012, the Sonoma Sate Men’s Rugby Club took an additional step forward this year by winning the Northern California 7s tournament in Santa Rosa. Their five-win performance and tournament championship at the For Pete’s Sake Rugby Field earned Sonoma State the first invitation to the Men’s Open Division pool at the 2013 USA Rugby College 7s National Championship.

Santa Rosa Junior College reeled off wins against San Francisco State, University of Pacific and Humboldt State to earn a rematch in the finals against Sonoma State. After dropping the opening match of the tournament to Sonoma State by only five points, Santa Rosa would not avenge their loss as Sonoma doubled their margin of victory in the rematch due in large part to their two athletic forwards in Jake Boettcher and Tommy Fallon, as well as the leadership of captain and scrumhalf Jack McNamara. Although Sonoma’s head coach Anasa ‘Nas’ Koroitamana had plenty of compliments for his players, especially McNamara, it was the captain who could not be more grateful for his coach’s contributions. “We’re very thankful to have Nas as our head coach,” McNamara said. “He really taught us how to play sevens through all of his experience and it was really great we were able to win the tournament for him. Without him, we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are as a team.”

  1. I’m an old SSU alum and Santa Rosa Roses Rugby old boy. Awesome work, men! I can’t tell you how proud I am that you’re in Nationals! I coach U22 7’s- The Iowa Lions… A select side bunch from 4-5 universities. Maybe we’ll cross paths some day.
