Texas State joins College 7s National Championship field

BOULDER, Colo. – Texas State will compete in the Men’s Division I bracket at the USA Rugby College 7s National Championships after Notre Dame was forced to back out due to finances. The Bobcats played in four sevens tournaments over the spring semester, where they notched wins over Houston, Iowa State, Midwestern State, and Sam Houston State. In the Southwest Conference 7s Championship, Texas State placed third behind North Texas and Texas A&M – both of which have qualified for the College 7s National Championships. “This has been the first season we’ve emphasized spring sevens and it’s been a successful campaign,” said Texas State coach Scot Courtney. “The shift in structure has allowed our program and the entire Southwest Conference to more fully develop and focus on their sevens.” The May 23-24 tournament at the University of Denver will provide the team the chance to play against some of the very best sevens sides and find out just where the Bobcats compare to the country’s elite. “We are excited about the opportunity to compete against the best collegiate sevens programs at the upcoming USA Rugby College 7s National Championships,” added Courtney. “While we look forward to showcasing our own program, we are proud of and wish the best for the fellow Southwest teams North Texas and Texas A&M, as well.” The entirety of the National Championship event leading up to the Cup Finals for the Men’s DI and DII and Women’s field will be available to watch live on USA Rugby TV, while ESPN 3 will broadcast the three Cup Final matches live from 4-6 p.m. MT.
